Kacel Pi Nipo: Together (As One) in Memory

The Transformative Memory International Network (TMIN) is a SSHRC Partnership Grant, hosted by UBC. It is a collective of artists, activists, and scholars asking what makes the work of memory transformative after periods of political violence, using methodologies of knowledge exchanges and relationship.

Under the title Kacel Pi Nipo, TMIN seeks to support community-based memory work through fostering knowledge exchanges and memory work through creative methods.

Proposed Activities

3 sessions gathering 25–30 women survivors, guided by elders.

WAN, Youth Advocacy Network (YAN), Music for Peace, Justice and Reconciliation Project (JRP)

Producing a community report and memory booklet.

Circles of Memory and Healing

Storytelling and Grassroots Knowledge Exchange

In Acholi tradition, the Wang Oo a communal fire where families gather to tell stories, has historically been a central space for learning and healing. Reviving the Wang Oo combined with structured knowledge exchange provides an opportunity for women survivors to reconnect.

Given the continuing silence and stigma, creating inter-regional platforms for exchange is critical. This project brings together survivors from Acholi, Lango, Teso, and Karamoja.

Key Interventions

German Project

(Survivors of CRSV from Uganda have access to safe networks of survivors)

Ensuring survivors of CRSV have access to safe networks.

This project aims to strengthen CRSV survivor participation in transitional justice through the initiation and further reinforcement of survivor networks in Uganda, South Sudan, Mali, and Ethiopia, fostering cross-country collaboration and learning.

"The Women Advocacy Network stands alongside survivors of conflict-related sexual violence, not merely as a service provider, but as a partner in their journey toward healing, empowerment, and renewed hope."
